2. Anna Qabale Duba
Anna, a dedicated nurse hailing from a remote village in Kenya, was deeply moved by the persistent struggles that women and girls in her community faced, particularly in the areas of education and health. Growing up and working in these settings, she witnessed firsthand the dire consequences of limited access to basic healthcare and educational opportunities, compounded by longstanding cultural barriers. Driven by a desire to enact change, Anna confronted these challenges head-on, striving to shift her community’s perceptions about the importance of female education and healthcare access.
In her quest to make a lasting impact, Anna founded the Qabale Duba Foundation. This organization is at the forefront of transforming the lives of women and girls in her village and beyond. Through her tireless efforts and the activities of her foundation, Anna has brought about significant cultural shifts, offering hope and tangible improvements to the lives of many.
Anna’s remarkable achievements and her profound impact on her community did not go unnoticed. In recognition of her dedication and the positive changes she spurred, Anna was honored with the prestigious Aster Guardian Global Nursing Award in 2021. This accolade serves not only as a testament to her incredible work but also highlights the potential for committed individuals to drive change and improve lives in even the most challenging environments.
3. Teresa Gray
At home in Anchorage, Alaska, nurse Teresa Gray was enjoying a quiet evening playing a board game with her children. Suddenly, the news of a massive earthquake in Turkey and Syria on February 6 shattered the tranquility. Despite being over 5,500 miles away from the disaster zone, Gray sprang into action immediately.
Gray is the founder of Mobile Medics International, a nonprofit that sends small teams of volunteer medics to humanitarian crises worldwide. Her teams are known for their rapid response, often being on the ground within the first few days of a disaster. Since its inception in 2017, Mobile Medics International has responded to dozens of disasters, providing free medical care and comfort to more than 30,000 people across five continents. Last year, Gray’s extraordinary efforts were recognized when she was named a Top 10 CNN Hero. Afterwards, by February 7, Gray had secured permission from Turkey’s Ministry of Health to join the relief efforts. Without wasting any time, she flew out early the next morning.
Gray packed supplies to treat hundreds of patients, including trauma dressings, antibiotics, and acetaminophen. She also prepared the necessary equipment to ensure her team’s self-sufficiency in the freezing winter conditions they would face. After a long journey through Seattle and New York, Gray finally landed in Turkey late on February 9 and met up with her team. They made their way to Hatay Province, where they began conducting mobile clinics on the streets of Samandag.
The level of destruction Gray encountered was hard to fathom. “Just the total amount of annihilation … this is probably the most devastation that I have ever seen on any mission that we’ve been on,†she reflected.
With so many structures deemed unsafe, the government mandated that all families sleep outside in tents. In a cell phone video made on Valentine’s Day, Gray described how her group would go from street to street, stopping at tents to offer their help. They treated people for earthquake injuries, including a girl who had been trapped in the rubble for more than 12 hours, as well as illnesses like the flu, which were exacerbated by the harsh living conditions.
During their 10-day mission, Gray and her team treated hundreds of people. Consequently, one of their interpreters, a high school teacher named K.T., became an indispensable part of their operation. In a cell phone video, K.T. shared with Gray the gratitude expressed by the people they were helping.
Finally, through her relentless dedication and compassion, Teresa Gray exemplifies the profound impact that individuals make in the face of overwhelming adversity. Unquestionably, her story is a testament to the power of human spirit and the difference that one person, with a determined heart and a clear mission, makes in the world.
